He gained a large audience for his debut single Old Town Road, which was released in December 2018 and was briefly at number one on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart before being controversially removed from that chart. After being reinstated to Hot Country Songs, it became only the twelfth song to reach number one on both that chart and all of Billboard’s main genre-based rankings simultaneously. As of July 2019, it has accumulated over 45 million YouTube views, 627 million Spotify streams, and 55 million digital downloads worldwide.
